Kale Pause is a small-scale public hospitality project located on the hillside facing Kadifekale in İzmir. Designed as a resting point along the historic district’s visitor routes, the project creates a calm pause within the urban landscape where travelers can slow down, gather, and spend time.
The project occupies approximately 500 square meters and combines indoor and outdoor uses. The enclosed interior functions as a restaurant, café, and bar, offering a comfortable environment for visitors to rest, eat, and enjoy the view toward Kadifekale and the surrounding city.
Beyond the interior, the design extends into a garden that supports informal outdoor activity. Open areas allow children to run and play, while shaded seating zones provide relaxed spaces for families and travelers.
A series of lightweight wooden pergola structures organize the semi-open areas of the site. These structures are designed to host temporary local producer markets and small craft stalls, allowing regional producers to present their goods directly to visitors. In this way, Kale Pause becomes a spatial intersection where local culture and international tourism meet.
Positioned in direct visual dialogue with Kadifekale, the project frames views toward the historic fortress while offering a contemporary public environment for rest, gathering, and exchange.
While the primary focus of the design lies in the outdoor public interface and landscape, the interior space was also developed to support the overall atmosphere of the project, maintaining a calm Mediterranean character that complements the surrounding context.
